Sometimes circumstances require that pet owners find a new family for their pet. Though this can be a heart breaking decision, it can also be a positive for the animal when it finds a new loving family. HATS is not a rescue. We do not take in animals. There are area rescues that can help you with rehoming your pet or you can try to do it on your own.

One of the first things you can do is list your pet on Rescue Me, a site that lists animals needing new homes for free. Visit the site at http://animal.rescueme.org/NorthCarolina and choose the “Find a Home for an Animal” button. Your listing will be sent out to potential adopters. There is also an “Animal Rescue Groups” button where you can search for rescue groups by breed.

Make sure you include good photos of your pet, as well as much information as possible, such as: is the animal good with other animals? Kids? Up to date on shots? Spayed and neutered? Giving potential adopters and rescues as much information up front as possible will help ensure the right fit more quickly.

You will also find some great tips and information on the Best Friends site.
